Return To New Johns

Marty Mantz

Marty Mantz with 3 giant smallmouth!

Return to new Johns:  It looked to be a hot sunny day according to Mr. Weatherman, and of course he was right.  The night before as several of us camped out was anything but dull! Large ominous looking clouds appeared on the horizon and threatened to wipe our tents right off the ground, things got hairy around 1 am when the storms came thru but it all turned out ok.

Tourney morning rolled around and the skies were clear the storm just a cloud on the horizon and the winds were light boats were pulling up and people were gathering and launching their boats, everything ran smoothly the meeting was held and off we went into the distant sunrise.

Some boats managed to get under the bridge, several people even did minor surgery to their boats to be able to make it under the bridge so it was about even with boats going east and boats going west.  It looked to be a classic east vs. west battle of the canals again.  My boat wasn’t going under the bridge no way no how! So off to the west I headed.

The weather straightened out the wind died down and the sun was hot I headed down the first canal throwing my bigfoot he didn’t get touched all the way down, I began to think uh oh was sup fish aren’t going to bite today!  Headed for another destination second cast Mr. Frog got hammered by a big ol pig smallie, after a nice acrobatic show she was in the net things began to look up! On and on I fished side by side with Jeff and later with Cody it was a tough day very hard to get the fish to bite where I was fishing but eventually I had my 3 and they were some whoppers.

As the day passed saw the usual boats zipping around all over the lake in search of fish, weigh- in time arrived and boats were pulling in to the dock amid buzzing jet skis and boats pulling water tubes and skiers, it can be very testing on your patience when a jet ski buzzes ya while your fishing!  Time to see how the boys fishing the east side did!

Some nice fish were weighed and then Marty stepped to the scale holding a bag full of giant smallies and a big smile, it was all but over at that point! Weighing in 3 smallies over 4 lbs for a total of 12.96 lbs! A new club record for smallies and the heaviest stringer so far this year beating his total from Nelson this spring. It was his second win in a row and 3rd overall for the season.   Here is your top 5
