Cody Arth

Cody Arth with 2 giant smallmouth!

The streak is over! Prior to this tournament Marty had 5 consecutive victories going back to last season, and it was one of our youngest anglers in the club that decided that was enough of that!. Congratulations Cody Arth! On your first victory in the club so far and let’s hope there is more to come. It’s been nice being the reigning king of the circuit but all good things must come to an end and it couldn’t have happened to a nice young man than Cody.

It all started Friday while prefishing in nasty weather, Mother Nature was not so nice to us this time around for she dealt us a Colorado low pressure system that was huge and producing a lot of rainfall and wind! I can deal with the rain but I don’t know a single person that likes the wind! It was tough day prefishing.

Tourney day rolled around more of the same Winds that were supposed to be 5 to 10 of course tuned out to be 20 for most of the day and of course the rain had to join in also making it a difficult day. The drawing was held and off we went it wasn’t really a battle of east vs. west canals this year because the high water kept us from getting under the bridge to go east! So well call it battle of the west! The wind was kicking the rain was coming and off we went anyways not to be deterred.

Fishing was great for some surprisingly in this weather, and poor for others, I myself had a hard time zeroing in on the correct pattern, I thought I had it all figured out but all I had most of the day was follows, while in another part of the lake Paul and his group were just hammering the fish all day! Matt and Deryk were fishing the same waters as I was with similar results, Jeff and Janine also one here one there. A lot of anglers that stuck to the first canal were striking out too.

Finally about 1 hour before weigh in the sun came out a bit and the winds let down and the fish instantly responded and Cody was in the right spot at the right time and stuck it to them! Matt and derrick made a last minute charge and did well also. I picked up my last fish and lost a giant oh well that’s how she goes, Paul lost several large fish that day. A lot of very nice fish were weighed even in the miserable weather! New Johns Lake system and associated canals are loaded with giant smallies and fishing can be exciting given the correct circumstances.

Here are the top 3.

1. Cody Arth 9.79 lbs (3 fish) also biggest fish (4.41) lbs

2. Paul Reinbold 8.82 lbs (3 fish)

3. Matt Sullivan 8.75 lbs (3 fish)

Full results and pictures can be found on the website. Thanks to all that came and participated even in the weather! And geo and Mike keep making them burgers! And bring that magic hot chocolate machine! We’ll see everyone at Fish creek on June 4th!
